Everything you need to know about silk care.
Your Every Day is Worthy of Silk
Why did I choose to create my Blossoming collection from silk – this luxurious fabric that was once a privilege of the nobles? Silk has been valued since ancient times and wearing it provides an incredible pleasure to both body and soul. It liberates the inner elegance, poise, and gracefulness, it seems capable of softening even our sharpest edges. Why not have that every day? Instead of wearing silk on special occasions, let us live this day as if it were our last. Can there be a better occasion than now?
Today, right here and now I am wearing a silk skirt and a cotton top, paired with sneakers. On other days, I put on a sweatshirt over a spaghetti strap silk dress or pair the silk blouses with jeans. If I need to, I dress up the same outfit by stepping into different footwear and changing my accessories.
When creating the first trial models, I used a synthetic fabric. Once the first heatwave arrived, I did an experiment: one day I wore a dress made from a delicate and lightweight wrinkle-resistant synthetic fabric. I was overheating and sweating as if I had been wearing a plastic wrap. The following day the temperatures rose even higher, but I chose a silk dress – the difference was incredible. I could not have been happier with my outfit and I knew right away that silk was the right choice.
I can hear the questions already: did the fabric wrinkle? Were there any sweat stains? I will be very honest: yes, it creased a little, but only slightly, even though I wore the dress all day, ran errands, drove my car, spent time sitting down and having meals. Cotton and viscose wrinkle considerably more. There were no sweat stains and the water I had splashed myself with dried out in an instant without leaving any marks.
To ensure you have a care-free day while wearing your silk, who’she team prepared some valuable tips about silk care that will hopefully answer your questions and resolve your worries. Read on!
Silk Care
It is often the case that silk garments are avoided simply because of their complicated care. Undeniably, silk requires slightly more attention than cotton or synthetics, but take it from us: with a little bit of patience and know-how you will be able to enjoy this special fabric for a long time and easily take care of it at home.
Is Dry Cleaning the Only Way Out?
Dry cleaning specialists know how to treat silk and always take on the responsibility in case something bad happens to the garment during the cleaning process. However, the flip side is that dry cleaning can be time consuming and rather costly – this is where some home care tips come in very handy.
Washing
Silk is a natural fiber, not prone to gathering dust, germs or other impurities, so if you do not want to wash your garment after having worn it just once, hang it outdoors for a couple of hours (carefully avoiding direct sunlight) – it will air out and be ready to wear again.
Using a steamer is another great way to freshen up your silk garment without having to wash it. Not only will it smooth out the creases but also get rid of any bacteria.
If you do have to wash your silk garment, here are a few things to keep in mind:
When possible, always handwash your silk in lukewarm or cold water – that is the safest method, which will help maintain the longevity of the garment. If you choose machine washing, select the setting for either silk or delicates. Water temperature should not exceed 30º C.
When hand washing or just before placing your garment in the washing machine refrain from rubbing the stains, as it can damage the silk fibers and leave a white blotch. Get a special detergent for silk stains, apply a small amount on the stain, let it sit and then wash.
Always wash your silk garments inside out and never mix different colors in one wash – silk tends to bleed in water and can potentially stain other garments when washed together or in the same water. Do not worry if the water got colored, it is a natural feature of silk and your garment is unlikely to fade.
Do not wring out the garment after washing it, twisting a wet fiber can ruin this delicate fabric. Remove the excess water by gently tapping the garment with a towel, then let it dry on a hanger, drying rack, or by laying it on a towel over a flat surface (avoid wooden hangers, they can leave a stain). After machine washing, make sure to remove the garment right away to avoid wrinkling. Never let silk air-dry in direct sunshine, UV exposure can give the fabric a yellowish tone.
After the wash, we recommend rinsing the garment in water with a dash of white vinegar. Vinegar helps remove the remaining chemical components of the detergent and restores the natural shine of silk.
Ironing
The rule of thumb is to iron silk while it is a little damp. Dry silk is much more difficult to iron.
To protect the glossiness of silk, always iron it inside out.
We recommend starting to iron with the lowest temperature and adjusting it as you go, always keeping a close eye on the silk. Our experience shows us that silk can take a slightly higher temperature than indicated on the care label, but it should be increased gradually and with utmost care to ensure that your garment does not get scorched.
Steaming
Using a steamer is a great alternative to ironing your silk. It is an effective and convenient tool and can replace the iron for your non-silk garments as well.
Steaming is the safest and most reliable care technique for delicate garments. Using a steamer, you will remove the wrinkles easily and will not risk scorching or otherwise damaging the fabric. While using a steamer, it is important not to touch the fabric. Always keep a safe distance and bring the steamer closer gradually.
Static Cling
Silk static is hard to avoid, especially during the cold seasons when the air is dry. The good news is we have some hacks to help you significantly reduce it. Here they are:
Anti-Static Spray. Before wearing your silk outfit, use an anti-static spray – it effectively reduces the static cling of silk and other fabrics. Remember to turn your garment inside out before spraying it and make sure to keep a 15 cm distance from the nozzle to avoid stains.
Moisturizing. Plan your outfits the day before and if you decide to wear silk, take good care of your skin in advance. If your body is moisturized, static cling will not bother you nearly as much if at all. If you are rushed and do not have enough time for a thorough beauty routine, simply moisturize your palms and run them over your body under the garment, it will significantly reduce the static cling.
A metal hanger. To reduce static cling, grab a wire hanger and glide its edge along the garment to see instant improvement.
Safety Pin. Wear a safety pin on the inner hem of your garment. Metal helps neutralize the charge, making this a great prevention form static cling.
Wearing silk not only gives us pleasure, it teaches us patience and reminds us to devote time to ourselves – something that we often neglect.
We sincerely hope that our suggestions will help you enjoy the luxury of silk longer. All our tips are only recommendatory, we believe that each of you will discover something that best suits your needs.
